Importance of power cable quality

Power cables are a fundamental element of every electrical installation. What is testing according to IEC 60228?

The test involves verifying whether a given power cable meets all the requirements specified in the standard. It covers four main areas:

1. Electrical properties

The most important technical parameter of a cable is its resistance – the opposition it offers to current flow. The lower the resistance, the more efficient the cable is, resulting in lower energy losses and reduced overheating risk. IEC 60228 specifies the maximum permissible resistance for each conductor size and type.

2. Mechanical properties

During installation and operation, cables are exposed to bending, pulling, and accidental damage. Therefore, it is essential that their construction is durable and resistant to mechanical damage. The test includes checking elongation before breaking and resistance to bending.

3. Thermal properties

A cable should maintain its performance even at elevated temperatures that may occur under higher electrical loads. The test checks resistance stability at different temperatures and the heat resistance of the materials.

4. Chemical composition

Copper is most commonly used in cable manufacturing due to its excellent electrical conductivity. Chemical testing verifies whether the cable is made from pure copper or a less suitable alloy or material. Advanced techniques such as XRF spectrometry are used for this.

How does testing work at RCC?

At the RCC testing laboratory, this process is carried out using modern measuring equipment and in accordance with normative procedures. Key methods include:

  • Resistance measurement using the bridge method – allows for precise determination of resistance over a known length of cable.
  • Measurement of conductor cross-section and diameter – determines the actual cross-sectional area of the cable and compares it to the manufacturer’s declared data.
  • Chemical composition analysis using XRF spectrometry – verifies whether the cable is made from the proper material, e.g., pure electrolytic copper.

Sample result:

For a cable made of 32 wires with a diameter of 0.2 mm, a cross-section of 1.0053 mm² was obtained. Resistance measurements showed the following values: 0.0505 Ω (yellow-green conductor), 0.042 Ω (red), 0.044 Ω (blue). All values were within the limits specified by IEC 60228.
