New edition of standard EN 60598-1:2025 – What’s changing and why it’s important to stay up-to-date

Shortcuts

In March 2025, the latest edition of the EN 60598-1 standard, "Luminaires – Part 1: General Requirements and Tests," was published, replacing the previous version from 2021. Although the previous edition was harmonized with the LVD directive just two years ago, the pace of technological and safety changes necessitated a comprehensive update to the document.

Why is it worth taking a closer look at this standard? Because it addresses fundamental aspects of the design, production, and use of luminaires – both for residential and industrial applications.

What is the EN 60598-1 standard?

This is the primary document outlining general safety requirements for luminaires powered by voltages up to 1000 V. It covers aspects such as:

  • Construction – mechanical and electrical protections, protection against electric shock, heat and fire resistance
  • Materials – quality of insulation, wiring, durability of enclosures
  • Testing – thermal, electrical tests, resistance to moisture and dust (IP)
  • Marking and documentation – required information on luminaires and in user manuals
  • Compatibility with other standards – the basis for specific standards, such as those for industrial, office, or garden luminaires

What’s new in the 2025 version?

The 2025 edition is not just an update; it is a complete overhaul of the standard. The numbering of chapters and annexes has changed, which makes it difficult to compare with previous versions and may cause confusion for users. But that’s just the beginning:

New requirements for battery-powered luminaires and their accessorie

Annex W has been added, which details the requirements for luminaires powered by batteries or accumulators and their accessories, such as remotes. Among the issues addressed are child safety concerns – battery compartments must be designed to limit the possibility of batteries being removed. Mandatory markings and instructions for batteries have also been introduced.

New approach to photobiological safety

The standard expands the assessment of photobiological hazards. In addition to blue light, UV radiation (A, B, C) and its effects on the skin, lens, and retina are now part of the analysis. The evaluation must be carried out according to IEC 62471-7:2023.

New pictograms in instructions

There is now a requirement to use pictograms that inform the end user about the replaceability of light sources and control equipment. Sample symbols indicate whether components can be replaced by the user or only by service personnel.

Non-replaceable light source by the end user

Non-replaceable control equipment by the end user

Why is it important to stay updated?

The changes introduced in EN 60598-1:2025 have a real impact on:

  • Design and certification of new products,
  • Compliance with legal and market requirements,
  • End-user safety.

Adhering to the new regulations is not only a requirement but also a way to build a competitive edge in the industry.
