b) Symbol with an underline
This version is used when the manufacturer bases the marking on harmonized standards that specify additional technical and quality requirements. The underline indicates that the device meets not only the directive’s requirements but also certain European standards, often perceived as a higher compliance standard.
4. Requirements for placing the symbol
Under the WEEE Directive, the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol must be placed visibly, legibly, and permanently on the device. If technical reasons make this impossible, the symbol can be included on the packaging or in the technical documentation provided with the device.
a) Minimum size of the symbol
The symbol’s height must be at least 7 mm to ensure readability and visibility. For very small devices, proportional reduction is allowed, provided the symbol remains legible. The manufacturer must ensure the symbol remains visible throughout the device's lifespan.
b) Placement of the symbol
Preferably, the symbol should be placed directly on the device's casing to ensure the user notices the obligation for selective waste collection. If this is not feasible, it may be placed on the device label or in the user manual.
5. Importance of compliance with the WEEE Directive
Proper marking and compliance with the WEEE Directive are crucial for environmental protection. The selective collection of electrical equipment facilitates the recovery of valuable materials, such as precious metals, and minimizes the harmful impact of hazardous substances (e.g., mercury, cadmium) on the environment.
